Frequently Asked Questions | CarBuyer

What is Total Cost of Ownership?

Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) is an estimate of all costs involved in buying, financing, owning and maintaining a car. It includes cash based costs only, adjusted for inflation.

For any car, Total Cost of Ownership can be displayed daily, weekly, monthly, in total, or per kilometre. The TCO displayed represents an average over the period of ownership.

How do we calculate the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) for a Car Affordability Review?

We use a comprehensive Total Cost of Ownership tool called CarCalc.

CarCalc calculates the Total Cost of Ownership for any car regardless of usage or circumstances. It includes all relevant and applicable information (where available).

Our Car Affordability & Car Expense Reviews are based on calculations from CarCalc.

What are the 'CarCalc Settings' boxes on Car Affordability Reviews?

CarCalc Settings boxes represent some of the selection options available on CarCalc.

Selection options are available across various aspects of purchase, finance and ownership.

As you make your selections, the Total Cost of Ownership changes. Examples include choosing your Ownership Term and selecting your Estimated Annual Distance (in kilometres).

CarCalc Settings have been included in our Car Affordability Reviews to help you understand your usage and ownership choices and how they affect affordability.
